The balance between births and deaths in an age-structured population is strongly influenced by the spatial distribution of sub-populations. Our aim was to describe the demographic process of a fish population in an hierarchical dendritic river network, by taking into account the possible movements of individuals. We tried also to quantify the effect of river network changes (damming or channelling) on the global fish population dynamics. The Salmo trutta life pattern was taken as an example for.We proposed a model which (...) includes the demographic and the migration processes, considering migration fast compared to demography. The population was divided into three age-classes and subdivided into fifteen spatial patches, thus having 45 state variables. Both processes were described by means of constant transfer coefficients, so we were dealing with a linear system of difference equations. The discrete case of the variable aggregation method allowed the study of the system through the dominant elements of a much simpler linear system with only three global variables: the total number of individuals in each age-class. Neste artigo, pretendemos abordar os elementos educacionais da Grécia antiga, fundamentais tanto para a formação e o desenvolvimento da cultura ocidental como para a constituição da paideia cristã da antiguidade. Destacamos como a idealização do épos deu lugar à formação do cidadão a partir do ideal de uma areté política que, no período helenístico, tendo seu apogeu na pólis grega, vai ser alternado por outros valores mais ligados à individualidade. Nesse sentido, consideramos que a paideia grega, em seus diferentes momentos, (...) vai ser elemento chave para a construção de uma paideia cristã. Esta, por sua vez além de sintetizar elementos universalistas do pensamento grego, se nutre de um tempo oportuno, de um kairós para expandir a mensagem cristã oriunda das promessas da religião judaica de um messiah para a universalidade dos homens, cuja expressão vai ser fundamental para a construção dos valores da sociedade ocidental. Charles Peirce’s Illustrations of the Logic of Science is an early work in the philosophy of science and the official birthplace of pragmatism. It contains Peirce’s two most influential papers: “The Fixation of Belief” and “How to Make Our Ideas Clear,” as well as discussions on the theory of probability, the ground of induction, the relation between science and religion, and the logic of abduction. Unsatisfied with the result and driven by a constant, almost feverish urge to improve his (...) work, Peirce spent considerable time and effort revising these papers. After the turn of the century these efforts gained significant momentum when Peirce sought to establish his role in the development of pragmatism while distancing himself from the more popular versions that had become current. The present edition brings together the original series as it appeared in Popular Science Monthly and a selection of Peirce’s later revisions, many of which remained hidden in the mass of messy manuscripts that were left behind after his death in 1914. Montesquieu's The Spirit of Laws is an enduring classic of social and political theory deserving a fresh reading every generation. The modern reader, however, is likely to find a work that ran to over a thousand pages in its two-volume first edition a bit overwhelming. Presented here, therefore, is the first English-language compendium of The Spirit of Laws, together with the first English translation of the posthumously published treatise containing the physiological theory underlying Montesquieu's theory of climate.

O ensaio teórico-reflexivo tem como objeto de discussão uma reflexão sobre a relação entre a alfabetização de jovens e adultos e o sentido da educação emancipatória a partir dos postulados de Paulo Freire, educador brasileiro que trouxe uma nova visão de educação, caracterizada como revolucionária. Uma análise das políticas públicas de EJA, com destaque para a alfabetização de adultos na década de 1990 até os dias atuais, é apresentada com o objetivo de compreender como a descontinuidade e fragilidade de tais (...) políticas têm sido um entrave para o desenvolvimento de projetos educativos de escolarização inicial e continuada, cúmplices do compromisso da formação e emancipação dos sujeitos. Destaca-se no texto o significado de emancipação em Freire como humanização do oprimido e superação dos seus condicionamentos históricos. Apresenta a educação de jovens e adultos pautada no diálogo e problematização como um ato político, agente de conscientização e potencializadora da emancipação do ser. (shrink)

Un Bachelard formé à la physique et à la chimie qui n'auraitjamais donné sa véritable place à l'étude mathématique est l'interprétation qui prédomine depuis le colloque de Cerisy (1974). Le logicien Roger Martin affinne qu'il existe un silence coupable autour du problème des fondements (problématique ensembliste, axiomatique et logicisme). À partir d'une analyse serrée des textes, cette étude renoue (...) avec une image beaucoup plus juste d'un Bachelard pour qui la mathématique n'est rien de moins que « le sur-moi de la science ». The Writings of Charles De Koninck, Volume 1, introduces a projected three-volume series that presents the first English edition of the collected works of the Catholic Thomist philosopher Charles De Koninck. Ralph McInerny is the project editor and has prepared the excellent translations. The first volume contains writings ranging from De Koninck's 1934 dissertation at the University of Louvain on the philosophy of Sir Arthur Eddington, to two remarkable early essays on indeterminism and the unpublished book "The Cosmos." Pierre Bayle réalise une triple opération sur le concept de critique : 1. il généralise la critique ; 2. il lui donne le caractère d'instance où est établie la vérité ; 3. il en fait ainsi un tribunal particulier qui a son droit propre et ses procédures. Cette triple opération repose elle-même sur deux gestes. Le premier concerne le rapprochement de deux sens de la critique : la critique philologique et la critique publique. Le second geste concerne l'extension du champ (...) de la vérité et de la certitude au domaine des faits, et plus seulement à celui de la raison. Pierre Bayle étend ainsi la méthode cartésienne à l'histoire. Cette extension hétérodoxe du cartésianisme joue un rôle notable, d'une part dans l'application des notions de vérité et de certitude au domaine des faits et, d'autre part, dans l'identification des notions de raison et de critique. Ces deux gestes de Bayle constituent un nouvel espace : l'espace intellectuel comme lieu de la critique, c'est-à-dire l'espace de la république des lettres. Pierre Bayle has accomplished a triple operation on the concept of criticism : 1. he has generalised criticism ; 2. he has given it the character of a trial which establishes the truth ; 3. he has thus made it into a special tribunal with its own law and procedures. This triple operation is itself based on two actions. The first is to do with the bringing together of two meanings of criticism : philological criticism and public criticism. The second concerns the extension of the field of truth and certainty to the realm of fact, and no longer simply that of reason. Pierre Bayle thus extends Cartesian method to apply it to history. This heterodox extension of Cartesianism plays a significant role, on the one hand in the application of notions of truth and certainty to the realm of fact, and on the other hand in the identification of notions of reason and criticism. Bayle's two actions constitute a new space : the intellectual space as the location of criticism, in other words, a space which is the republic of letters. (shrink)

Sa pratique scientifique et sa réflexion philosophique n’ont cessé d’être hantées par le problème de la portée ontologique de nos connaissances. Ce problème émerge chez Ampère dans un cadre conceptuel kantien qui insiste sur la part de subjectivité déterminant nos représentations. La pensée d’Ampère va alors impliquer une véritable controverse intériorisée avec le fantôme de Kant. Tout en insistant sur l’origine subjective de nos idées, Ampère a cherché à contredire l’idéalisme qu’il (...) associait irrémédiablement au kantisme. Pour soutenir un réalisme structural, il interprète alors la notion de « forme » à travers un filtre physiologique lui permettant d’affirmer la probabilité d’une analogie entre les noumènes et les phénomènes. Hervaeus Natalis distinguishes two types of items that can have esse obiective in the intellect: objects of acts of intellection (man, this cat, etc.) and properties unapprehended by these acts, or background properties (being a species, being a particular, etc.), that are beings of reason. Yet, his conception of the esse obiective of objects evolved. First, he had a neutral conception of esse obiective: items presenting themselves to the intellect are cognized, transparently, without being altered in the process. Later, he (...) developed an ontologically committing conception of the objective being of objects: items presenting themselves to the intellect take on rational being (esse rationis) as such. This evolution transpires because Hervaeus introduces intentional relations as what makes the cognized item be objectively in the intellect and includes them within the class of background properties (being of reason). There are two main and several subsidiary difficulties with this paper.1The first main problem is that the authors, in calling for a revolution in the way that withdrawal of treatment cases are dealt with, fail to recognise that their desired revolutionary utopia is the ordinary workaday world of the law courts.The English law in relation to the administration of treatment to children, and the withdrawal of treatment from them, is straightforward: the only lawful treatment is that which is in the (...) child's best interests. The Children Act 1989 ) puts it slightly differently, but synonymously: the welfare of the child is the paramount consideration. Yes, the views of those holding parental responsibility are sought, but those views do not determine where the child's best interests lie. This is often misunderstood. One hears people talk about a parental veto on proposed treatment or a withdrawal of treatment. There is no such veto. There is a de facto presumption that a parent's views on what is in their child's best interests will coincide with what those best interests are, but that presumption is rebuttable, and is very commonly rebutted, for instance, as the authors note, in many Jehovah's Witness cases. …. Burke approaches man in terms of human actions. His key concepts--elucidated at length in A Grammar of Motives --are act, scene, agent, agency, and purpose. Men are viewed as agents acting in a scene and using some agency for the accomplishment of some purpose. This is a "field" orientation of the sort found in George H. Mead's "philosophy of the act," in Edward C. Tolman's "purposive behaviorism," and in Talcott Parson's concept of "action-system." Burke makes many references to Mead, and (...) his approach to man is very similar to Mead's in its stress upon the act, upon man as a symbol-using agent, and upon the forms of "identification" which role-taking makes possible. The focus of Burke's attention is, however, upon man's literary products as a mirror in which to behold the forms and complexity of human motivation. He is in effect telling us--and showing us--the importance of the study of man's most complex symbolic acts as a way of enriching our understanding of human nature. In the Rhetoric, humanistic material is penetratingly analysed in a way which supplements and broadens the conception of man gained from more narrowly scientific studies. In his discussion of the range and the principles of rhetoric Burke considers Cicero, Aristotle, Augustine, Bacon, Bentham, Marx, Carlyle, Empson, Veblen, Diderot, La Rochefoucauld, De Gourmont, Pascal, Ovid, Machiavelli, and Dante. Of his analyses of literary works the pages on Castiglione, Shakespere, Kafka, and Kierkegaard are very fine. That no student of man should neglect this humanistic material or this mode of linguistic analysis is convincingly attested by Burke's achievements. (shrink)

L’écriture généalogique et l’enchaînement de filiations en catalogue sont un des modes narratifs caractéristiques de la mythographie, mais on les retrouve aussi bien au cœur d’un corpus apparemment distinct, celui de la doxographie. Que ce soit G. Dumézil, composant différents dispositifs autobiographiques, ou Diogène Laërce, le doxographe utilise la systématique généalogique pour mettre de l’ordre dans l’histoire d’une transmission du savoir. Faut-il voir cependant une simple adaptation du modèle généalogique par la doxographie ? La relation de maître à disciple est-elle (...) la transposition immédiate de la relation de filiation ? C’est en fait un parcours complexe qui se dessine entre ces deux pôles, qui passe par la question de l’origine et de la transmission de la loi. De Minos à Pythagore, entre philosophie politique de l’époque classique et mystique néo-platonicienne, l’ordre généalogique ne va pas de soi et possède une histoire propre.Genealogical Order: Between Mythography and Doxography. Genealogical writing and the listing of filiations represent one of the narrative modes characteristic of mythography, but they may also be found within the apparently distinct corpus of doxography. Doxographers such as G. Dumézil, who wrote a number of autobiographies, and Diogenus Laertius, make use of genealogical systematics to put in order the story of knowledge transmission. Is it simply a case of an adaptation of the genealogical model to the doxographic narrative? Is the relationship between master and disciple just a transposition of filiation? In fact, a more complex pattern develops between mythography and doxography, linked to the theme of origin and transmission of the law. From Minos to Pythagoras, between classical political philosophy and neo-platonic mysticism, genealogical order is not self-evident and has its own history. (shrink)

After a couple of weeks I eventually got around to reading the preprint and started wondering about recasting the argument in my preferred formalism. I arrogantly assumed that this would allow one to smooth out parts of the proof and simplify the details of the definition of the forcing conditions (at the cost of taking the framework set out in §§1,2 below as given). However when I tried to write things down I found myself, to my chagrin, more or less (...) cornered in making my definitions into most of the intricacies that Friedman had been. I suppose that this shows that the original proof is in some sense the natural one (or one of a family of ‘natural’ ones). Nevertheless I obstinately persisted and this note is the result. (shrink)

L'ouvrage s'articule autour de deux perspectives. La première consiste à analyser des processus factuels touchant la réalité, mais aussi les représentations, la hiérarchie des valeurs, le statut de la violence au sein des démocraties contemporaines. Il ne s'agit pas de donner une vision globale, mais de mettre en évidence des transformations singulières, obscures et inaperçues qui affectent pourtant profondément la politique et sont susceptibles de rendre compte des dérives de la démocratie aujourd'hui. Ainsi, le monstre ordinaire, le maître anonyme, la (...) nouvelle trinité sont des concepts qui permettent de comprendre les métamorphoses du rapport entre la norme et sa transgression, la mise en place de nouveaux dispositifs de domination ou encore l'hégémonie de valeurs purement instrumentales. La seconde est normative, elle entend dépasser les faits pour s'interroger sur notre capacité à repenser et à changer le cours des choses au plan politique. Il en va ainsi de la reconsidération de la notion de légitimité démocratique, de la distinction des différents modes de consultation des populations, de l'élucidation des modes d'identification collectifs, des réflexions sur les conditions d'une laïcité vivante. Cette réflexion s'étend aux questions de la traductibilité politique d'une doctrine ou d'une pensée, d'une politique de la traduction, du traducteur et de sa clandestinité dans la détermination des politiques culturelles.
